Scope: which credential this guide covers
This guide covers Texas RN licensure by examination and renewal, not advanced-practice authorization or an individual compact-privilege determination. Official source ↗
Use this checklist when reviewing a registered nurse for work in Texas. It addresses the Registered Nurse License; it is not a complete inventory of every credential that a particular role or assignment may require.
Review the basis for Texas practice
Distinguish a Texas-issued RN license from another state’s license and any claimed compact privilege. Capture the jurisdiction and the reviewer’s verification date with the employee’s record. Route residency or multistate-practice questions to the nursing credentialing lead; a shared expiration spreadsheet cannot resolve those questions by itself.
Keep specialty and onboarding checks separate
The RN license is one part of a nursing onboarding file. Store employer-requested training and specialty certificates as separate records so their dates do not overwrite the RN deadline. When CE is satisfied through certification, retain enough evidence for the reviewer to understand that route without collecting unnecessary sensitive personal information.
Evidence to retain for the reviewer
- The exact credential category, jurisdiction and authority record checked.
- Current status and the expiration or registration period shown by the authority.
- The supporting document, verification date and accountable review owner.
- Any unresolved scope or assignment question, with a follow-up date.
These are recommended employer records, not a claim that the authority mandates this particular software or checklist.
Renewal context for the staffing calendar
The usual continuing-competency period is two years. Official source ↗

How this guide is maintained
Regulatory facts cite official government or licensing-authority pages. Unconfirmed values stay unknown. Employer checklists are suggested internal workflows, not additional licensing rules. Reviewed records have a maximum 90-day review window; overdue records leave the sitemap and search indexing until rechecked.
