Scope: which credential this guide covers
A salesperson performs licensed activities under a responsible broker; this is not a broker license. Official source ↗
Use this checklist when reviewing a real estate agent for work in California. It addresses the Real Estate Salesperson License; it is not a complete inventory of every credential that a particular role or assignment may require.
Link the salesperson record to the responsible broker
A brokerage roster should identify the salesperson category and the broker relationship supporting the person’s activities. Review that relationship during transfers and onboarding rather than only on expiration dates. Keep the broker’s own license record separate from each salesperson’s education and renewal file.
Handle late and timely-pending renewals differently
Do not use one “renewal submitted” status for every case. Record whether the application was timely and ask the responsible reviewer to check DRE’s rules before deciding whether activities may continue. After approval, preserve the new expiration evidence and the completed review so the next four-year cycle starts from the correct record.
Evidence to retain for the reviewer
- The exact credential category, jurisdiction and authority record checked.
- Current status and the expiration or registration period shown by the authority.
- The supporting document, verification date and accountable review owner.
- Any unresolved scope or assignment question, with a follow-up date.
These are recommended employer records, not a claim that the authority mandates this particular software or checklist.

How this guide is maintained
Regulatory facts cite official government or licensing-authority pages. Unconfirmed values stay unknown. Employer checklists are suggested internal workflows, not additional licensing rules. Reviewed records have a maximum 90-day review window; overdue records leave the sitemap and search indexing until rechecked.
