Scope: which credential this guide covers

This record covers California RN licensure. Advanced-practice certifications and other nursing categories require separate review. Official source ↗

Use this checklist when reviewing a registered nurse for work in California. It addresses the Registered Nurse License; it is not a complete inventory of every credential that a particular role or assignment may require.

Display active and inactive records distinctly

A valid-looking license number can coexist with an inactive status. During onboarding and renewal review, retain the board status as well as the expiration date. Keep advanced-practice credentials separate so an RN renewal does not inadvertently close a review of a different authorization.

Document pending-renewal decisions

When the nurse has submitted a renewal but the board record has not yet changed, retain the receipt and ask the credentialing lead to review the BRN conditions. Record the follow-up date and the basis for any assignment decision. A document upload or an unexpired CE certificate should not automatically be treated as a completed licensing review.

Evidence to retain for the reviewer

  • The exact credential category, jurisdiction and authority record checked.
  • Current status and the expiration or registration period shown by the authority.
  • The supporting document, verification date and accountable review owner.
  • Any unresolved scope or assignment question, with a follow-up date.

These are recommended employer records, not a claim that the authority mandates this particular software or checklist.

Renewal context for the staffing calendar

After the initial birthday-based license term, renewal is every two years. Official source ↗

How this guide is maintained

Regulatory facts cite official government or licensing-authority pages. Unconfirmed values stay unknown. Employer checklists are suggested internal workflows, not additional licensing rules. Reviewed records have a maximum 90-day review window; overdue records leave the sitemap and search indexing until rechecked.
